Behind the wheel at Barons Tony Cavell and Peter Gascoigne have worked in Classic Car sales, restoration and race-car preparation for nearly three decades, working together for the past 20 years, and have been associated with Barons for the past decade. Tony was a well-known MKII racer and Jaguar race-car preparation specialist, with a string of successes both behind the wheel and as a Race Engineer, while Peter started out racing Minis in 1970 before turning his attention to Classic Cars in the 1980s. Alongside their classic sales and restoration business, Tony and Peter have built and prepared a huge number of racing cars on behalf of their owners, including Austin-Healey 3000s, XK Jaguars and Ford Mustangs. One notable machine was ‘1628 VC’, the only surviving ‘works’ Jaguar Mk II racing car. Driven by Roy Salvadori in the early 1960s and subsequently raced successfully by privateer John Sparrow in the British and European Saloon Car Championships, it was in a sad state when Peter Gascoigne discovered it in 1996, having been used for drag racing, with a 7-litre engine shoehorned under the bonnet. Peter and Tony restored the car to its former glory and original specification just in time for Tiff Needell to drive it at the first Goodwood Revival in 1998. And the car then went under the hammer at Barons’ first-ever auction, just a week later. “Peter and I are very excited to be in the driving seat at Barons, after working together, both at Barons and before, for many decades,” said Tony Cavell, adding, "we will continually develop and grow the company, but our key strengths of offering value for money to both vendors and buyers, the fantastic sale venue at Sandown Park, our depth of knowledge of the classic car world and sheer enthusiasm for classic and collectors’ cars, will remain unchanged.” Company Secretary and administrator is Karen Ruffles. Other members of the team include Mike Thomson and Carol Cavell at document control, drivers and general logistics, James Craig, John Cooper and Nigel Copcutt. Additional office staff include Tim Gascoigne and Marc Kings who look after provisional bids and negotiations. We also have agents dotted around the country who can assist with consigning you classic. Our New Forest office is staffed by Karen Ruffles and Marina Dear between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. We are now in our 20th year and though we have brought many improvements to the business, we have remained committed to the same values and continue to offer the same, high quality service at very competitive rates. Unlike many of our competitors there are no hidden fees. When we sell your car, we issue payment in 6 working days. Our sellers commission is just 5% of the hammer price, plus the VAT and return the balance to you. The only other fee is the Entry Fee, which you pay up front. If we do not sell your car and provided that it has a reserve that reflects the market value, we offer an entry into the next sale, without a further fee. If you have three or more vehicles, to offer, we have special rates, which are very generous. Not only do we hold your funds in a secure account client account, we issue payment in just 6 working Days. There is no reason for any auction house to hold onto your funds for any longer. We carry out all of the necessary checks, including an HPI check and still manage to pay in only 6 working days. Many houses will keep you waiting for at least a month and some keep your money for 90 days. We can do this because we do not accept anything but cleared funds. No vehicles leave us until the funds are in our bank. Barons do not operate any Accounts. Unlike many of our competitors, we do not accept payment by cheque, If your car is sold at Barons, it remains sold. If you are a Buyer you are looking in the right place because we offer one of the lowest buyers premium in the UK. In terms of fees charged we are the least expensive of the serious players. The largest houses, where cars are just one aspect of the business, charge 15% on the first £50,000, others charge 15% across the board. Barons charge just 10%. Payment is faster and the service is professional but friendly.
