Leski Auctions / Stamps, Coins & Postal History - 22/08/2020 / Aerophilately & Flight Covers / Lot 273
Nov.1919 - Feb.1920 (AAMC.27a) Batavia - Sydney intermediate, flown cover carried by Ross & Keith Smith on their flight from England in the Vickers Vimy. The cover shows a fine example of the vignette accompanied by Netherlands Indies adhesives, all tied by multiple strong strikes of the oval "FIRST AERIAL MAIL" cachet. The cover, #14 in the Frommer listing (illustrated at page 25) is one of the more spectacular examples, bearing advertising for the "Oranje Hotel" in Soerabaia and is one of only 15 identified by Frommer as having originated in the Dutch East Indies and one of only 2 with DEI adhesives. Provenance: Lucien Toutounji, Charles Leski Auctions, March 2003.
