Near East - Sumerian jasper amulet in the form of a lion-headed demon A Sumerian jasper amulet in the form of the lion-headed demon Imdugud (Zu), servant of the sky god Enlil. This minor deity was associated with thunder. In the general form of a domed, flat-backed circular bead, the features of the face have been carved with a high level of finesse to suggest the demon's head in profile. The reverse is incised with a network of hatched designs. A drill hole for suspension runs longitudinally from the crown of the head.
