Prestige Philately: Public Auction 179 - Friday 22nd February 2013 (12PM AEST): CHRISTMAS ISLAND - Postal History: Lot 1406: 1841 lengthy entire headed "On Board Ship Barnstable April 16th 1841/off Christmas Island Lat 10 degrees 33 minutes" and signed "Samuel A Brimblecom", to Massachusetts, no postal markings, minor aging. An extraordinary item, believed to be by far the earliest recorded letter from Christmas Island: full transcript included. [The writer states "...We made Christmas Island this morning...This island is about 230 miles from Java Head and about 300 from Batavia...We have made land twice, St Paul's Isle we made on the 29th day of March, and Christmas Island this morning..."]ÞÞChristmas Island was entirely uninhabited. However, the discovery of rich phosphate deposits resulted in mining operations commencing in the 1890s.
