Abacus Auctions / Public Auction 176 - Friday 12th October 2012 (12PM AEST) - 12/10/2012 / PAPUA - Missionary Mail / Lot 819
PAPUA - Missionary Mail - 1941 commercial airmail cover from Uruguay "via USA" to "Convent du Kubuna/Catholic Mission/Yule Island/ Papua", censored at Sydney, sender's endorsement "Monique de Boismenu" on the flap. Terrific origin/destination cover. [The sender was almost certainly a relative of the Catholic Bishop of Papua. Kubuna was a Catholic Mission north of Port Moresby. However, the cover was probably delivered to Yule Island] ÞÞBishop Alain Marie Guynot de Boismenu succeeded Bishop Navarre in 1908. He opposed the government's "spheres of influence" policy that limited mission activities to defined areas. He challenged the LMS "heretics" at Kwato, and expanded Catholic mission activities into the Highlands.
