1856 Flying Eagle 1C PCGS Proof 64 Boldly struck. Beautiful toning and certainly better than the assigned grade. These rare Flying Eagle cents of 1856 were struck along with the old style Large Cents as an experiment to see if a greatly reduced size cent would find acceptance. For years people had complained about the large, heavy cents in circulation, and these new much smaller "cents" were an instant sucess. When the Flying Eagle cents were formally released in 1857, people lined up to buy as many as they could. The 1856 initial issue has found immense popularity since that time, with its tiny mintage and revolutionary designs. Only 1,500 struck.
