The MG J2 Midget design is iconic, being the starting point for the square rigged MGs, a style which was retained up to the TF in the 1950s. The beauty was not skin deep however as the car was fitted with a jewel of an engine at 847cc with a cross flow single overhead cam, twin carburettors, four speed crash gearbox and improved chassis. In addition, these cars were road tested at over 80mph, which was an amazing achievement for such an affordable car with such a small engine. This MG J2 is particularly rare, retaining its original style clam shaped front wings, which were only fitted towards the end of production. According to MG production records, chassis number J4170 was built on 16th October 1933 and delivered to Blakes Garage in Liverpool. It was purchased by its first owner, a Mr D.W. Allardice, who had family and business connections in South America and the car was taken to Santiago in 1939 where it stayed until the 1960s. The car was then purchased by US Navy Commander Tilson and restored by him, exported to the USA where a few years later it was sold to an enthusiast who owned the J2 for 34 years. The current owner imported the car back into the UK two and a half years ago and has spent the last two years restoring the car mechanically back to its original specification. Work done involved fitting many new and restored original parts including petrol tank, new rear Hartford shock absorbers, brake shoes and linings, brake cables, Blockley tyres, wiring loom, restored oil pressure and ammeter gauges, correct control box, engine valves, camshaft drive to list just a few. A history file comes with the car with all recent receipts, together with the import papers from Chile to the USA. Finished in original MG colours of two-tone red with a dark red interior, the whole car has a wonderful patina. Weather equipment consists of a pair of rare sidescreens plus a hood for use as a pattern to make a new one if the new owner so wishes. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a rare triple M car with that has had an extremely interesting history.
