Tuesday US Currency Weekly Online Auction - 04/03/2020 / Lot 81192
Columbus, MS - Real Estate Banking Company of Columbus $50 Dec. 8, 1837 G28, Kraus 14273, Leggett 39. PMG Very Fine 20. This is a bold note from a distinctively engraved series by the Co./Woodruff & Mason, Cincinnati. A frontiersman with rifle and powder horn strides through the wilderness in the top center vignette. To the left and right are "L" counters. Both end panels show framed portraits between "50" counters. At left is Lafayette, though a bit crudely portrayed, and at right, Washington. The base shows a steamboat vignette. Noted only with "Previously Mounted." An oval Mobile ink stamp is on the blank back. This seldom-offered type is assigned Rarity-7 ratings in both books . Rare Mississippi banknotes are often closely held by their collectors. This beautiful note is new to the collector fraternity for its enjoyment. We first sold this for $564. Ex: Eric P. Newman collection.
