Belle Vue Zoo Manchester Hippo UK / 1950s / Travel Posters / 76x51 Original vintage travel advertising poster for the Belle Vue Zoo in Manchester featuring a colourful image of a hippopotamus yawning reflected in ripples of water against a bright yellow background with the text above and below in stylised bold black and red letters. Opened in 1836, the Belle Vue Zoological Gardens was a popular tourist destination, one of the largest zoos in England that expanded to become the "showground of the world"; due to increased competition, the zoo closed in 1977, the amusement park closed in 1980, the gardens closed in 1982 and the exhibition halls and speedway closed in 1987.
