Great illustration by Reginald Lander (1913-1980) showing birds flying in front of the green grass and dramatic rocks with the sand and a small rowing boat on the sea below, entitled The Amphitheatre Giant's Causeway. A popular tourist destination, Giant's Causeway is a natural volcanic rock formation located on the Causeway Coast in the north of Northern Ireland near the small seaside resort town of Portrush; Giant's Causeway was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1986 and a national nature reserve in 1987; according to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built across the North Channel by an Irish giant, Fionn, which was destroyed by a Scottish giant, Benandonner, after he lost a fight between them and escaped back to Scotland.
