Qing Dynasty - Tai Ping Rebellion. Sheng Bao, circa 1854, AE 50 Cash (24.1 g, 46.5 mm) Obverse legend "Tai Ping Tian Guo" (Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace), reverse legend "Sheng Bao" (holy currency). The largest denomination for the bronze series issued by Tai Ping Rebellion. A well made coin with thick rims, sharp characters and heavy weight. Even chocolate toning on both sides, cleaned and traces of corrosion. Very rare. The Tai Ping Rebellion was one of the most influential and disastrous insurrections in the late Qing Dynasty. Hong Xiuquan, the leader of this rebellion, started as a religious leader (Christianity) in a group known as God Worshipping Society. Once noticed the weakness of the Qing government, he then claimed himself the brother of Jesus Christ and rose in revolt. The rebellion was very successful with over 30 million people and 600 cities involved. The regime they finally built was officially called "The Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace", and Hong proclaimed himself the "Heavenly King". However, the ruling class soon developed great interest in hedonism, even though the regime never enjoyed a minute of peace. Collapsed from inside, the regime fell after the death of Hong.
