Historics at Brooklands / Brooklands Motor Museum 7th June 2014 Car - 07/06/2014 / 1968 Jaguar 240 / Lot 426
In September 1967 the Jaguar Mark II was re-labelled as the 240 and 340 compact saloons. They were interim models to fill the gap until the introduction of the XJ6 in September 1968. The 340 was discontinued on the introduction of the XJ6 but the 240 continued as a budget priced model until April 1969; its price of £1364 was only £20 more than the first 2.4 in 1956. The 240 now had a straight-port cylinder head with twin HS6 SU carburettors and a new inlet manifold. To keep costs down, Jaguar replaced the leather with Ambla, a simulated leather material and tufted carpet was used on the floor. Other changes included the replacement of the front fog lamps with circular vents and optional fog lamps for the UK market. The sales price was reduced to compete with the Rover 2000 TC. For the first time the 2.4 litre model could exceed 100 mph, resulting in a slight sales resurgence. We are pleased to offer this 1968 Jaguar 240 presented with excellent gleaming black coachwork and with the attractive contrasting red Ambla interior. The Jaguar has the advantage of being supplied with the rare manual overdrive all synchromesh gearbox, with the original sales invoice also stating that the car was supplied with a laminated windscreen, front seat safety belts and reclining seats. The car is in very good condition overall with some areas that may be improved with little effort that may result in it probably becoming one of the best 240 Jaguars. We advise any potential purchasers to inspect the extensive, large and interesting history file. The vendor informs us that the 240 drives very well and has only been used for weddings and sunny day use for the past 15 years. We are assured that this compact Jaguar 240 will arrive at the sale with a fresh MoT test certificate and a new battery to assure a lucky new owner and must represent an opportunity especially considering the realistic estimate.
