The Bentley Mark VI was the first post-war luxury car from Bentley produced from 1946 to 1952, it was also the first car from Rolls-Royce with factory coachwork but chassis were still also supplied to independent coachbuilders. The chassis and engine went on to be used as the basis of those in the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith of 1946 and Silver Dawn of 1949. The factory bodies were made by Pressed Steel Ltd of Coventry and sent to the Bentley works at Crewe for painting and fitting out with traditional wood and leather. They featured rear hinged ""suicide"" doors at the front and a sliding sunroof. Those buyers with a more discerning palette and deeper pockets also had the option of using one of the many coachbuilders available at the time such as James Young Ltd. This was a British coach building company started in 1863 in London Road, Bromley. Originally producing horsedrawn carriages. In 1908 they made their first car body for the local Member of Parliament. From 1921 they bodied several Bentley cars as well others such as Alfa Romeo, Sunbeam and Rolls-Royce. The company had grown sufficiently to take their own stand at the 1925 London Motor Show. As well as individual commissions James Young also fitted some standard designs to cars including Talbot and Sunbeam and in 1937 the company was bought by London Rolls-Royce dealer Jack Barclay. This fine example of Bentleys popular Mk. VI was indeed designed and constructed by James Young. Believed to be just one of six built. Finished in dark grey over cream, it has been the subject of a comprehensive structural restoration completed by RS Panels approximately 12 years ago. Since then the car has been used sparingly and always garaged. The interior is finished in grey leather with matching grey carpets all freshly installed. The woodwork is also in excellent order having been recently refinished. Picnic occasional tables are fitted to the rears of the front seat and twin fog lamps can be found either side of the main grill assisted by a centrally mounted spot lamp. A competitively priced and well proportioned coachbuilt Bentley.
