Provide quality images
Good quality images are important to us at MAD On C, because they help others view your collectible as well and as fairly as possible. With this in mind, we’ve put together a guide to help you get the most out of your images.
Any flat collectibles, like stamps or postcards, can be scanned if you have a scanner.
To do this:
Set your scanner to scan at 72 dpi.
Once your image is scanned into your computer, open it in a photo editing program. This could be Windows Photos, iPhotos or others.
Using your editing program, crop the image to be as square as possible, whilst keeping the object centred.
The minimum dimensions of your image after cropping should be 700x700 pixels and the maximum dimensions 2048x2048 pixels.
While editing, please do not add any filters to your image, as this may obscure important characteristics of your collectible from other members.
When you’re done editing, save your image and check the file size. If it’s over 1MB, you may want to consider reducing the size of the file.
Once you are finished editing and resizing your photo, save it and upload it to MAD On C.
Taking a photograph (using a camera)
Any non-flat collectibles will need a photograph taken. It’s important your photographs are of good quality, so that other members get the most accurate impression of your collectible.
Our galleries all have square image displays, so your uploaded images will be scaled to fit our image portal, which is a square box.
The minimum dimensions of your image after cropping should be 700x700 pixels and the maximum dimensions, 2048x2048 pixels, with a recommended dpi of 72 or more.
Here are some tips to help optimise your photographs:
Always try and have a clear or white background for your photograph. If the background needs to be a colour to show off the collectible, then make sure it’s a solid colour - preferably a light colour. If you’re struggling to find a good background, you can always put your collectible on a white sheet from around the house, or in a clean white bathtub. Make sure there are no objects or people in the background to distract from your collectible. Never take the photograph whilst holding your collectible!
Take your photos in a well lit area, so that your collectible is highly visible. Make sure that the majority of light is shining on the front of the collectible, not coming from behind it.
Make sure your photograph is well focused as you take it, but check it again for quality when you upload it to your computer. Look at your photo at 100% magnification to check for any blur!
4. Uploading images
Once you’ve taken your photographs, upload them to your computer as you ordinarily would. Once you’ve uploaded them to your computer, double-check them for quality before moving to editing.
You are free to use whichever editing program you like, so long as it has the crop function. Windows Photos and iPhoto are fine for cropping, although other programs will also work.
Open your photo editing program.
Crop the photograph so that the image is as square as possible, with the collectible centred.
Please do not apply any filters to images you upload to MAD On C, as it may obscure important qualities of the collectible from other members.
After you’ve finished editing, check your file size. If it is over 1MB, you may want to reduce the image. Reducing an image is different for Windows and Mac users:
- If you’re a Mac user, open the image in Preview.
- If there is no toolbar showing, click the ‘Show Markup Toolbar’ button , then click the Adjust Size button
- Make sure image maintains its proportions, by selecting “Scale Proportionally”
- You can then reduce the image either by % or by manually adjusting the dimensions (These will be kept in proportion since you selected “Scale Proportionally”).
- Once you’ve finished resizing, make sure you save your image and you’re ready to upload to MAD On C!
- If you want to reduce multiple images at once, simply open the file the desired images occupy in Preview. This will open all those images in one Preview window. Select them all and carry out the same steps as you would for reducing a single image.
- If you’re a Windows 10 user, there is no built-in photo reduction program, so you’ll need to download one if you have not already. We recommend downloading FastStone Photo Resizer for free here.
- Once you’ve downloaded and opened the program, you can drag and drop the images you want to reduce from your program files to the Input List on the right of the program interface.
- Once your image(s) is on the Input List, tick the ‘Use Advanced Options...Resize’, then click the ‘Advanced Options’ button which appears.
- In the Advanced Options, click on the Resize tab and select the box. This will bring up your resizing options.
- Select that you want to resize it by %, and choose what % you would like the image reduced by.
- You can view a preview of the resizing by clicking the Conversion Preview button
- Ensure that no filters are selected before pressing ‘Ok’ to close this window, which will return you to the main interface.
- Click ‘Convert’ and the program will resize your image as you’ve set it to. You will be prompted to save the newly resized image(s) in a folder - use a different folder to where the images were initially stored.
- Your images have now been successfully resized!
- Once you are finished editing, save your photo and go here for help uploading it to the MAD On C website.
Photographs from Mobile Phones
In many ways, you can treat mobile phones as cameras. Therefore, to take a good photograph with a mobile phone, follow the step by step guide above, for how to take a good photograph with a camera.
Some notes on Mobile Image sizes:
The size of your photograph will be determined by the camera quality settings you have on your phone. If your image is over 1MB we would recommend reducing the file size before uploading to MAD On C. You can either send the image straight to your computer (via email, dropbox etc.), and reduce it using our instructions (link/bookmark to image reduction instructions) or you can reduce the image size on your phone if you have an app with that functionality. If you’d like to do this, we recommend downloading Photo & Picture Resizer from the Play Store if you’re on an Android device, or Shrink My Pictures from the App Store if you have an iPhone. Follow the instructions on the respective apps to shrink your image file sizes. Once that’s done, you can save your images and upload them to MAD On C!
If you’re uploading images straight from your phone to MAD On C or emailing them to yourself to edit on your computer, make sure you do it over a Wi-fi connection, otherwise, it can consume lots of your mobile data.
Search for objects
There are two search engines on MAD on C, the General Search Engine at the top of the page and the Advanced Search Engine on the left of the page.
The General Search bar
The General Search bar is best used for searching categories and items rather than events and directory listings. It's simple to use. Type in the category heading of what you are looking for or just a simple word, and categories related to your request will appear in the drop-down menu. Select a category which seems appropriate or simply search whichever search term you’ve entered.
The Advanced Search Bar
The advanced search has a series of filters that enable you to be specific in different ways about what you are looking for. For example, geography or location, which makes it much more suitable for searching events and directories.
A unique feature we have included is the ability to search different galleries and marketplaces. Clicking on the marketplaces creates a drop down menu of different marketplaces for different purposes, for example, 'events', 'directories', 'sales listings' and much more Then you can search these with all sorts of further filers shown below.
Automatic 'Saved Searches'
Towards the bottom of the advanced search options, you will see that you can 'Save Searches'. Simply provide a name for the search you want to save and you will be given the option of being notified of new listings relevant to your search 'never', 'daily', 'weekly' and 'monthly'. It will do it for you automatically! So daily, weekly or monthly you will receive emails up dating you on new listings.
If you want, you can then click on saved searches, and the 'Default' option means that when you next log in to MAD on C, it will automatically show the results for this saved search.
You can also see your email notifications in your account dashboard.
